Sex!
Sex can be a taboo subject (just like mental health is) and of those people who do discuss it, many lie to appear more sexually adventurous or to appear to have sex more often than they actually do.
Did you know that these are facts?
· Size doesn’t matter
· Sex is not a sin (although some religions specify that this must be within certain criteria like marriage)
· Men and women can initiate sex
· Sex has no effect on sports performance.
· Sex shouldn’t be painful (see a medical professional if it is)
· Masturbation is not harmful, but also does not represent typical sex and can therefore affect your enjoyment.
Sex, libido and love are all natural. Humans appear to be the only creatures that gain pleasure from intercourse. Other creatures are driven only by the need to procreate. For humans, not only can you gain enjoyment and pleasure from intercourse, it also strengthens the bond between the participants.
However humans are also blighted by sexual dysfunction. Dysfunction is defined as any problem that prevents you from wanting or enjoying sexual activity between consenting adults. It is not just erectile dysfunction and it effects men and women. Statistics say up to 50% of men and (it is expected) many more women (as women can hide sexual dysfunction more easily than men) are affected.
Sexual dysfunction is often caused by underlying anxieties – particularly around intimacy and intercourse. Like other forms of anxiety these are often easily treated with the right help and support. Consult your GP for advice and a therapist to assist with the anxiety.
It doesn't have to be that way ...
